Tandi Sangam — Where Two Rivers Became One

High in the mystical landscape of Lahaul, at Tandi, two rivers meet—the Chandra and the Bhaga. Their union gives birth to the Chandrabhaga River, later known as the Chenab.

But the people of Lahaul tell a much more beautiful story about this meeting—a story of love, separation and eternal union.

According to local legend, Chandra was the daughter of the Moon God, while Bhaga was the son of the Sun God. The two fell deeply in love and wished to be married.

They climbed to the heights of Baralacha La, where they decided to take different paths around the mountains and meet again at Tandi for their celestial wedding. Chandra, energetic and swift, travelled through the mountains and reached Tandi first. Bhaga’s journey was slower and far more difficult as he struggled through the rugged valleys and rocky terrain.

Chandra waited anxiously. When Bhaga finally arrived, the two lovers met at Tandi—and their long-awaited celestial marriage took place.

Their separate journeys ended in an eternal embrace, and their waters flowed together as Chandrabhaga.

A River Born of Love

Today, when you stand at Tandi and watch Chandra and Bhaga come together, the Sangam feels like more than a geographical meeting. It is a reminder of two journeys that began apart but were always destined to meet.
