"For us, the Dorje is not just a symbol it is a compass guiding every journey we design."
The Dorje (Vajra) at the heart of our logo symbolizes indestructible truth and enlightened strength in Vajrayana Buddhism. For ZenYatra, it represents the union of wisdom and compassion the balance between movement and stillness. It reminds us that travel, when done mindfully, becomes a spiritual act of awakening.
Together, they remind us that every journey is blessed by nature's elements and the prayers carried by the wind.
"We are the co-founders of ZenYatra, and this is our journey."
I was born in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh. Coming from a sports background, I traveled extensively across India. Through those travels, I learned that our country is diverse yet deeply connected. Every region unique, yet every person carries the same essence of humanity. My homeland, Lahaul-Spiti, especially the village of Gondhla, continues to inspire me. The journey between Dharamshala and Lahaul-Spiti itself is a pilgrimage every couple of months I discover something new, a hidden trail, a forgotten story, a fresh perspective. That is what I want to share with you: the beauty of being from two of the most breathtaking places in Himachal, and the joy of exploring them mindfully.
I belong to the remote village of Chokhang in Lahaul, though I spent much of my life away from it, in Shimla, busy with academics. As a Doctorate in Geography, my research work on Lahaul-Spiti gave me the chance to travel into my own unknown homeland. At first, I didn’t fall in love with it, it felt strange, almost unfamiliar. But later in life, as a late bloomer in exploration, I began to see its beauty with new eyes. After more than 15 years of teaching, I realized my desire to build something of my own. That desire pushed me to join my husband in this venture ZenYatra.
From classrooms to mountain trails — the story of how two educators transformed their passion for Himalayan journeys into a mindful travel brand rooted in purpose, culture, and connection.
Nitesh begins organizing informal group trips to Lahaul-Spiti for friends and colleagues, discovering a deep appetite for mindful, off-the-beaten-path travel.
After completing her Doctorate in Geography with focus on Lahaul-Spiti, Dr. Sapna Thakur decides to co-found ZenYatra, bringing academic depth and cultural sensitivity to every journey.
The brand is born — rooted in the philosophy of Zen (stillness) and Yatra (pilgrimage). The Dorje becomes our emblem, and our first curated tours are offered to the public.
ZenYatra expands to cover 12+ Himalayan destinations, building a community of mindful travelers who believe travel can be transformative, sustainable, and deeply personal.
Let us craft a Himalayan experience that speaks to your soul. Every ZenYatra is uniquely yours.
